A Look at Maryland Addiction Issues and Treatment Solutions
The United States is not immune to the problems of drug addiction and abuse. Our big cities, including Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago and Baltimore, are somewhat notorious for their drug abuse statistics. These cities bleed into the surrounding areas and often cause problems for residents in local communities.
Maryland, in particular, has suffered dramatic consequences as a result of the drug crisis in its cities. Men and women in countless numbers have experienced the adverse effects of drug abuse and have needed to seek out the treatment opportunities offered at various addiction treatment centers in the state.
If you live in Maryland and need recovery help or detox treatment, options are available to get you started on the road to recovery today.
Maryland drug and alcohol abuse statistics
Drug and alcohol abuse rates in Maryland have reached alarming highs, according to statistics from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), particularly among young adults and adolescents.
One of the main reasons for these increasingly high rates is effortless access to these substances. With major cities like Baltimore and Annapolis serving as hubs for drug trafficking, it is no surprise that many residents can obtain drugs and alcohol with ease.
In addition, the state’s proximity to major drug trafficking routes, such as the I-95 corridor, plays a role in the high rates of drug abuse. Being on these routes increases the ease with which drugs are transported into the big cities and surrounding communities.
“In the Baltimore-Towson MSA, an annual average of 310,000 persons aged 12 or older used any illicit drug in the past year. This represents 14.3 percent of the MSA population and is higher than the rate for the State of Maryland (12.6 percent) and is similar to the national rate (14.7 percent).”
Nor has Maryland been immune to the opioid crisis and its effects. The state has seen a sharp increase in opioid-related deaths in recent years, with prescription opioids, fentanyl and heroin among the most commonly abused substances.
Understandably, these increases in abuse have led to increases in overdose as well. One study noted that “Data provided by the Vital Statistics Administration (VSA) of the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) show the number of unintentional drug-and-alcohol-related overdose fatalities increased from 671 deaths in 2011 to 2,799 deaths in 2020, or by 317.1 percent in nine years.”
Alcohol abuse rates in Maryland are also a cause for concern. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), Maryland has a higher rate of binge drinking compared to the national average (where binge drinking is defined as consuming a large amount of alcohol in a short time).
To address the issue of drug and alcohol abuse in Maryland, the state government has implemented various initiatives aimed at prevention, education and substance abuse treatment. These initiatives include increased funding for substance abuse treatment programs, stricter regulations on prescription opioids and public awareness campaigns to educate residents about the dangers of substance abuse.
What kind of treatment is available in Maryland?
From inpatient facilities to outpatient programs, the state offers a range of treatment options to meet the diverse needs of those seeking help.
One common type of addiction rehab available in Maryland is inpatient treatment. Inpatient rehab facilities provide a 24/7 structured and supportive environment for you to focus on your recovery without the distractions of everyday life. Patients typically stay at the facility for a set period, up to multiple months, receiving intensive therapy, counseling and medical care designed to
address addiction and any underlying mental health concerns.
Another option for addiction rehab in Maryland is outpatient treatment. Outpatient programs allow you to receive treatment while living at home and attending work or school. These programs may include individual counseling, group therapy, and support group meetings to help you maintain your sobriety and feel continued support.
For those seeking a more holistic approach to addiction rehab, Maryland also offers alternative treatment options such as wilderness therapy, equine therapy and art therapy. These non-traditional methods can provide you with new ways to maintain sobriety and cope with mental health symptoms or relapse concerns.
