Marijuana Decriminalization Approved by Pittsburgh City Council
The City of Pittsburgh voted Monday, December 21, 2015 to implement legislation that would reduce the possession of less than 30 grams (approximately one ounce) of marijuana to a citation offense, punishable by only a fine of up to $100.
City council held a meeting open to the public recently to hear from constituents regarding this matter. Attorneys, physicians, treatment providers and concerned citizens filled the meeting room and participated in the discussion.
Looking to the city of Philadelphia as an example, Pittsburgh City Council and supporters of the legislation believe this change will protect those charged with possession from unnecessary criminal charges that can negatively impact opportunities at employment and education. Others are concerned that the city’s new legislation may conflict with the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or encourage the use of marijuana.
